WHEN WILL I RECEIVE MY PLATE?
The DMV will only start processing and mailing out plates once 500 people have applied. We do not know when that will be, but feel free to reach out to our email to ask about progress. Want your plate sooner? Share the plate with your friends and get them involved. The more people that sign up, the faster the plate will be produced, and the quicker we get to work on preserving the GSL for generations to come.
CURRENT LICENSE PLATE NUMBER
The plate will be mailed to you with your same license plate number that you currently have (there is a space in the form for you to fill in your plate number).
MULTIPLE VEHICLES
You can get as many plates as you want! Make sure to fill out a separate application for each vehicle.
YEARLY CONTRIBUTION
The $25 is an annual contribution, which will be paid yearly when you renew your vehicle registrations.
PRESERVATION FUND
The proceeds of the donation will be put into a sovereign account managed directly by the Division of Forestry, Fire, and State Lands (which operates under the Division of Natural Resources – DNR) to protect the Great Salt Lake and will be used in their efforts to benefit and conserve the lake. You can read more about their efforts here. The use of the funds might take different forms depending on what the needs of the lake are. One of the ways it will be used, is to fund research, such as the work that is being done by the Great Salt Lake Institute under Dr. Bonnie Baxter.
PERSONALIZED/ CUSTOM/ VANITY PLATES
IF YOU WANT THE PLATE PERSONALIZED
If you would like the plate to be personalized you will need to also fill out form TC-817, in addition to the application form we have listed. At the top of the application, you will need to mark "NEW ORDER". Then, under, "Utah Special Group Plate" you will mark, "Great Salt Lake Preservation Support". There is an additional fee of $50.00 for the customization (bringing your total contribution to $97- $25 of which will go into the GSL fund and the rest will be for the DMV to cover processing costs). Form TC-817: https://tax.utah.gov/forms/current/tc-817.pdf
IF YOUR CURRENT PLATE IS PERSONALIZED AND YOU WANT TO REPLACE IT WITH A GSL PLATE
If you want to keep your personalization you will need to also fill out form TC-817, in addition to the application form we have listed. At the top of the application, you will need to mark "REPLACEMENT". And then under the Utah Special Group Plate you will mark "Great Salt Lake Preservation Support". There is an additional fee of $21.00 for the replacement plate with your customization (bringing your total contribution to $67- $25 of that will go into the GSL fund and the rest will be for the DMV itself for processing costs). Form TC-817: https://tax.utah.gov/forms/current/tc-817.pdf
COLLECTOR'S PLATE
You can purchase a collectors plate once the plate is manufactured and available (directly with the DMV). The $25.00 contribution will be charged and the plate will never be allowed on a vehicle. This is not a recurring plate fee. These purchases will not count as the 500 pre-registrations in order to manufacture the plate.
CAN I GET THIS PLATE DIRECTLY WITH THE DMV?
Not yet! Once 500 people have applied for it, we will send the applications/ contributions to the DMV at which point they will handle the plate requests. However, don't wait! If you want it now, get it! The price of the plate will not change once it is available to the public!
